Speaking @ Free Lunch Society
Born in Adelaide, James trained as an engineer and completed a PhD in numerical modelling.
James has published research papers and delivered lectures on a variety of global questions such as overpopulation, limits to growth, global fossil fuel constraints, and climate change. On the solutions side, James conducts research into energy efficient buildings, sustainable urban food systems, wicking bed irrigation and industrial wastewater recycling for peri-urban agriculture.
With this background he tends to bring a “hard numbers” view, not just to quantifying big-picture sustainability problems but also to assess the effectiveness of proposed solutions at all scales. He is not afraid to respectfully call “bulls***” on solutions that make no physical or numerical sense.
He has recently become a founding member of a new global movement called the Wellbeing Economy Alliance, a high-level group advocating for a more socially equitable and environmentally sustainable global economic system.
